Looking for Books in All the Right Places

Shiny fishing hook isolated on white backgroundI’m always looking for a good book to read, but sometimes it’s hard to know which ones are actually worth reading. More than once, I’ve been sucked in by a fantastic book cover only to find out the cover was the best thing about the book.

I’m getting better at resisting the lure of ooh-shiny book covers, or at least resisting the urge long enough to find out how other readers are responding to the content. Goodreads is a great source for that. I’ve found the ratings there to be more accurate (closer to what I would rate a book) than those on Amazon. Goodreads also has the extra filter of my friends list. I can see if any of my friends have read a certain book and what kind of rating they’ve given it.

For fun, I’ve included a poll, so take a moment to vote. Let me know which option you rely on the most to find a good book!

  1. I tend to read books based on what I’ve heard via word of mouth. Sometimes I’ll take my friends’ advice, but at the same time I’m leery of doing so, because if they loved it and I thought it was meh, feelings could get hurt. The one person I really trust with book recommendations is my little brother, who has excellent taste and has only rarely steered me wrong. He also convinced me to read Harry Potter when I was twelve, starting my great love of reading and putting me firmly on the fantasy/sci-fi track. So I owe him one πŸ˜€
